Mr Kay runs a poor house, expecting his head boy to be everywhere. When Fenn, the boy in question, is held up before a cricket match and his side loses, matters come to a head. Another boy is appointed over him! Which one will the rest of the house follow?

Another foray into public schools at the turn of the last century. A rather slow story that somehow fails to grip for the most part, not helped by long descriptions of football matches and predictable conversations. That said, and like many of PG's earlier books, it does improve on re-reading and is still essential for the enthusiast.
