Heavy Weather

A Blandings novel

Sacked by Lord Tilbury, the intended publisher of Galahad's Reminiscences, Monty Bodkin gets the job of secretary to Clarence, Lord Emsworth. When Lord E discovers that Monty is the nephew of rival pig-owner Sir Gregory Parsloe, he suspects dirty work is afoot and makes Monty unwelcome. Sue Brown, once engaged to Monty, is also unhappy at his arrival as she fears her fiancé, Ronnie, will find out and become jealous.

A direct sequel to the events in Summer Lightning.

Although it works well on its own and despite the convenient précis given by Hugo Carmody in chapter 2, this book is best read after Summer Lightning. A tale of manuscripts, lovers and of course, pigs, it is the tenth visit to Blandings and one of the best. The interview of an intoxicated Pilbeam by Connie and Julia in Chapter 12 stands out.

Julia:

'I regard the entire personnel of the ensembles of our musical comedy theatres as - if you will forgive me being Victorian for a moment - painted hussies.'
Ronnie:'They've got to paint.'
Julia:'Well, they needn't huss.'
