The peace and tranquillity of Blandings Castle is disturbed by the sudden arrival of Lady Constance, her acquaintance Vanessa Polk, the Duke of Dunstable, his niece Linda and rich American Wilbur Trout.
Linda's recently ex-fiancé John Halliday wants a reconciliation and the painting that Dunstable wants to sell to Wilbur. Vanessa wants to steal it. Lord Emsworth just wants peace and quiet and to top it all, the Empress has refused a potato. Never fear, there's a Pelican on the premises.
