Over Seventy

An Autobiography with Digressions

Written under the guise of a response to a letter this book is probably more digression than autobiography, and none the worse for that. Like the earlier Bring on the Girls, it is clearly written to entertain rather than inform, with the usual anecdotes, quotes and references, poems etc. There are even some tales from newspapers much in the vein of his earlier Our Man in America for Punch magazine. Despite which we do learn a little bit more about the man behind the books (and plays and musicals and ...).

Struggling to find some way to describe this volume, I think it might be what one of his novels would be like without a plot; entertaining but unfocussed. Unquestionably one for the committed fan but probably not if you just follow Jeeves and Wooster.

Sometimes described as the British version of America, I like you, the two books have about half in common but different structures and order. This book was written for the UK audience so is probably the better choice if you are British and don't want both (although as they are both available at low prices there's really no excuse.)
