Adapted by Valerie Wyngate and P. G. Wodehouse * from a play Dans sa candeur naïve by Jacques Deval.
First produced 21 March 1927 at the Empire Theatre, New York (152 performances).
Produced again the following year 21 August 1928 at the Lyric Theatre (173 performances).
* Usually cited thus but David Jasen, in his biography, says that the first adaptation was by Wyngate and that the show was on the road (presumably for the tryouts) when it was realised that a re-write was needed. PG was then called in to make changes. This fits the habit of that time of bringing in someone else to 'fix' a play. However, Wyngate was also in the cast of the show and might well have worked with PG on any re-writes, so perhaps both versions are true.
The play started life as The Cardboard Lover.
It was made into a film in 1942.
