The City Chap

A musical

Book:James Montgomery
Lyrics:Anne Caldwell
Music:Jerome Kern
Origin:The Fortune Hunter by Winchell Smith

First produced 26 October 1925 at the Liberty Theatre, New York (72 performances).

Wodehouse's contribution appears to have been the lyrics of two songs* 'borrowed' from the earlier The Cabaret Girl. Kern was fond of re-using his songs this way.

Synopsis

The hero, thinking he cannot make it in the city goes to a small town intending to marry the richest girl by impressing her with his city ways. When he finds her unattractive he turns his attentions to the drug store owner's daughter and introduces jazz there so increasing its takings and winning her. The rich girl also finds her man. [Based on a contemporary review.]
