About this site

Another Wodehouse web site?

This site has three aims, in order:
  1. To provide additional information to readers to help them get more out of the books. This is aimed particularly at younger and non-British readers.

  2. To assist amateur collectors on a tight budget to make sense out of the many titles and avoid expensive errors.

  3. To encourage people to read more Wodehouse, particularly his lesser known works.
This is not a scholarly work. Nor is it a simple fan site. You won't find lots of 'favourite' quotes (ok, one or two) or opinions on which actor was the 'best' TV Jeeves. What you will find is a lot of information presented in a simple way. I hope it's useful.

Work in progress

In a lifetime of 93 years, Wodehouse produced more than 70 novels and 250 short stories, as well as plays, musicals (libretti and lyrics), poems and hundreds of magazine and newspaper articles. We might never know how much he wrote under pseudonyms. Inevitably, it will always be a case of 'work in progress'. For updates, see the What's New page.

Copyright and other matters

Disclaimer: I am not a lawyer. The following expresses my understanding of the effects of English law on this site and nothing else. You must not rely on anything here as allowing you to take or not take any action. You are responsible for finding out how the law in your country affects you.

The text of some books and stories can be found elsewhere on the Internet. This may be legal in the USA, where most such sites appear to be based. However, Wodehouse's work is under copyright protection in the UK and this site is based in the UK. Consequently, I cannot reproduce any of his works here even though you may be in a country where it's legal to do so.

I acknowledge the Trustees of the Estate of P. G. Wodehouse as copyright owners of his work.

NO original text or graphics have been reproduced from any other web-site, except by permission, but I have included work that is out of copyright, mainly poems, for your convenience. Any content which is not my work alone is in the public domain or should count as 'fair dealing', e.g. review, educational etc., with regard to the stated aims of this site. If I have inadvertently included something which is under copyright protection, you are the copyright owner and you object, please e-mail me with details and I will make suitable amendments.

I assert copyright in all original work. You are welcome to link to this site with the appropriate credit. Please let me know if you do this (in case I change the page).

Accessibility

Due to lack of time, programming and artistic skills, I have kept the design simple and avoided fancy menus, graphics, Flash etc. This site isn't going to win any style awards but it should be easy to read and, for the most part, dial-up friendly. It was originally designed for Microsoft Internet Explorer 6 *, but I have switched to Mozilla's Firefox 2 * as my main browser. They interpret HTML etc., differently so I have tried to make pages that work in both. Please let me know if you have problems with my site on either of these or any other common browser.

I have also used cascading style sheets (CSS), with separate screen and print sheets, the latter converting most text colours to black for clearer printing on monochrome printers. If you have difficulty in reading the screen or font, some browsers allow you to over-ride screen fonts for display and printing. See your browser's help screens for how to do this. If you have a mouse with a centre wheel, try holding down the Control key while spinning the wheel - a quick way to get larger text.

Although originally designed on a monitor running at 1024x768 pixels, I've tested sample pages at 800x600 and they are readable. Widescreen users might get more pleasing results by reducing the width of the browser window from the maximum available, but it's not necessary.

For further advice, try www.abilitynet.org.uk, RNIB or organisations in your country.

I have not been able to test this site with text to speech software. If any reader using it and who has got this far would like to tell me how it fares, please send me an e-mail.
