Wodehouse's works by year - index

Most Wodehouse sites list his books and stage works in date order, but in separate lists as in this site. A few sites list his short stories in date order in yet another list. Many include a short history. As far as I know, no-one else has produced a combination of all of these and having done so, I know why - it's hard work and involves many compromises if it's not be too long to be useful. The list is divided into eight pages based on decades.

NB: These lists are restricted as follows:

Books are listed by their first publication in the UK or US, whichever came first. If they appeared under different titles across the Atlantic, the first title is used and the second included as a note, as is a second year if not the same. Remember, however, that most books were published first as serials in the same year or the one previously. Where there was a gap of more than three years, an additional entry lists the first serial publications. Omnibus editions and posthumously published collections are excluded from the main list.

Short stories are listed by their first magazine publication as many were only published in book form many years later. Different titles of the same story are noted but not entered twice unless there was also a major re-write. Some stories with uncertain details are omitted.

Stage works are listed by the first Broadway or London opening unless they did not get that far, when the first recorded showing is used. When a piece opened on both sides of the Atlantic, only the first is noted, and only those with a significant PG contribution are included.

Articles and poems etc from magazines and newspapers are excluded to hold the lists to a reasonable size.

Order: Items within a year are not in order but are listed with novels first, followed by collections, serials, shorts and finally stage works. This could result in a collection being listed before a story it contains.

Life notes apply to the year of publication. As most works were written the previous year (or earlier), look at years above for events that might have influenced a work.
