Valley Fields

'... a thin disguise for the Dulwich where so many of my happiest hours have been spent.'

- P. G. Wodehouse.

Description

A fragrant backwater. '... six miles from London or, if a crow, only three.'

London postal district SE 21. Some of the houses have been converted from detached properties to semi-detached. Accommodation can be obtained through Messrs. Matters and Cornelius, House Agents, of Ogilvy Street. There is a pub near Mulberry Grove, just around the corner at Benjafield Road, and two more, the Green Lion and the Green Man, in Rosendale Road. The Bijou Palace (One Hundred Per Cent Talking) is at the corner of Roxburgh Road and Myrtle Avenue. The Oddfellows' Hall is in Ogilvy Street. There are train and bus services into London.

Mulberry Grove, off Rosendale Road, is a cul-de-sac with lilac, almond, thorn (hawthorn), rowan and laburnum trees but only two houses, Castlewood (detached) and The Nook/Peacehaven (converted to semi-detached). On the other side of the road is an ornamental pond inhabited by two swans, Egbert and Percy. The rear gardens back on to Valley Fields Lawn Tennis Club. Peacehaven is 'a two-storey edifice in the Neo-Suburba-Gothic style of architecture'. Nearby are two other houses, Chatsworth and Balmoral.

Burberry Road also features houses that have been converted into semi-detached residences, notably Mon Repos/San Rafael and Beau Rivage/Sans Souci. Acacia Road contains Balmoral. (Another, or the same, Acacia Road is mentioned as being in Dulwich in Psmith in the City.)

The turnover of occupants seen above is only to be expected in suburbia.
