Lady Constance

Lady Constance Keeble
Lady Constance Schoonmaker

Personal

Née Threepwood, she has nine sisters and two brothers, including Clarence, Lord Emsworth. (For the rest of her relatives, see the Threepwood family page.)

Brought up by governesses she later went to Roedean. She is a strikingly handsome woman in her mid-forties, with the carriage of an Empress, constructed on the lines of the severer type of Greek goddess.

She was married to Joe Keeble, an American millionaire who died, then to James Schoonmaker, another American millionaire.

Inclined to come the Grande Dâme, she bullies Clarence into attending fêtes, wearing top hats, the Opening of Parliament, dinner with neighbours and many other activities befitting his position as an Earl and landowner but definitely not to his liking. She is something of a snob and a twenty minute egg.

History

She married her first husband, Joe, for love not money. She tried to help his step-daughter by a previous marriage, Phyllis, by arranging her engagement. When Phyllis eloped she declined to assist further, thus prompting the plot of Leave it to Psmith.

She also tried to stop her niece Angela from marrying James Belford, son of the local vicar, preferring that she marry Lord Heacham (Pig-hoo-o-o-o-ey!) and likewise tried to block the nuptials of her niece Jane and George Abercrombie (The Crime Wave at Blandings).

She brought the Efficient Baxter back to Blandings to try and steal the manuscript of her brother Galahad's Reminiscences as she feared the stories in it would alienate the family from society. (Summer Lightning and Heavy Weather)

An old friend of the Duke of Dunstable their engagement ended twenty years ago because her father would not meet Dunstable's terms for a dowry. He invited himself to Blandings and promptly decided that the Empress was too fat and a bad influence on Lord E., so he would take her. Lady C. immediately agreed to keep him happy, regardless of her brother's feelings, but also decided to have the Duke examined by a loony doctor, Sir Roderick Glossop. (Uncle Fred in the Springtime)

She repeated her match making efforts with Penny Donaldson and Orlo Vosper, without success as both loved elsewhere and Galahad was on hand to help them. (Pigs Have Wings)

Acting in loco parentis, she tried to keep Myra Schoonmaker from marrying a penniless curate. (Service with a Smile.) She later married James Schoonmaker, Myra's father.

She wanted to get rid of Beach but he rendered a valuable service. (Sticky Wicket at Blandings)

She visited Blandings with a friend she met on the boat, then tried to match her off to the Duke of Dunstable. (A Pelican at Blandings)
