Augustus Fink-Nottle

Personal

Known as Gussie, he lives in a remote village in Lincolnshire where he studies the habits of newts in his garden pond. He wears horn-rimmed spectacles, is fussy about his hair and has a face like a fish.

'You could have flung bricks by the hour in England's most densely-populated districts without endangering the safety of a single girl capable of becoming Mrs Augustus Fink-Nottle without an anaesthetic.'

History

He fell in love with Madeline Bassett when they met while out walking and he removed a thorn from her dog's foot. However, after years of isolation from society he could not bring himself to speak and sought Jeeves's advice. Dressing as Mephistopheles for a fancy dress ball failed and a second set-up at Brinkley Court left him babbling about newts. Then Bertie diagnosed a lack of Dutch courage or alcohol before the school prize-giving ... (Right Ho, Jeeves).

Although he eventually proposed and was accepted, his engagement to Madeline had many ups and downs due to his continued diffidence. This was cured when he took advice and started noting people's bad habits, but being Gussie, he lost the book in which he made notes. Keeping newts in his host's bath probably wasn't a good idea either. (The Code of the Woosters)

He was sentenced to 14 days without the option, under the name Alfred Duff Cooper, for wading in the Trafalgar Square fountains in search of newts. Later released after getting and paying the option, he found himself pretending to be Bertie Wooster while Bertie pretended to be him. He became infatuated with Cora Pirbright before returning his affections to Madeline. (The Mating Season)

When Madeline put him on a vegetarian diet, he became harsh and bitter as he is very fond of meat, especially cold steak and kidney pie. Emerald Stoker, the stand-in cook at Totleigh Towers where he was staying, took pity on him and made him a pie - leading to a change of affections ... (Stiff Upper Lip, Jeeves)
