In his younger days, he fell in love with a musical singer, Dolly Henderson, but his family disapproved and sent him to South Africa for three years. On his return he had some serious drinking to do. He remains a bachelor.
A short, trim, dapper little man in his late fifties, he remains active despite being somewhat wild as a young man. '... in his younger days he had always been happiest when knee deep in ballet girls and barmaids.' A little cock-sparrow of a man, he wears a monocle.
Now 57 (Full Moon) he lives in a fourth floor flat in Berkeley Mansions, Duke Street, St. James's in London on a younger son's allowance from the Blandings estate. This is enough to maintain a car and chauffeur but not to finance the needs of the friends and relatives he wants to help. Not that this ever stops him doing his best - many a nephew, niece or son or daughter of an old friend owes their happiness to Gally.
Something of a sportsman, he once owned a ratting dog called Towser.
A raconteur, he is very fond of telling stories involving his friends and acquaintances from his days with the Pelican Club, many of whom lived fast and died young.
Gally helped his godson Bill Lister to get close to his girl Prudence Garland, Gally's niece, by getting him into Blandings not once, not twice but three times. He also managed to help Tipton Plimsoll, the son of an old friend, get together with his niece Veronica. And he only involved the Empress once. (Full Moon)
When Sir Gregory broke a gentleman's agreement by shipping in a new pig, the Galahad - Parsloe vendetta started up with a vengeance. In between pig-related activities, Gally found time to help the nephew of an old friend and thwart Lady Constance's match-making again. (Pigs Have Wings)
Once again, Gally lent a hand, this time with the romantic affairs of the sons of two of his friends from the past. This involved the obligatory imposter (this time as Augustus Whipple) and a purloined letter. (Galahad at Blandings)
A minor accident laid up Galahad. For once he had to rely on brother Clarence to save the day. (Sticky Wicket at Blandings)
Gally helped yet another godson while fighting the machinations of the Duke of Dunstable. (A Pelican at Blandings)
