Sir Roderick Glossop

Personal

Fairly tall and fairly broad, he is distinguished by an enormous head with practically no hair on it apart from shaggy eyebrows. He married a Miss Blatherwick (later widowed) and has a daughter, Honoria and son Oswald. He also has a nephew, 'Tuppy'. His sister-in-law married a Professor Pringle.

He lives in London at 6b Harley Street, with a place in the country at Ditteridge Hall, Ditteridge* in Hampshire. Later, he opened a clinic at Chuffnell Regis.

Referred to as a nerve or brain specialist by some, 'loony doctor' by others, he is a psychiatrist by profession. President of the West London branch of the anti-gambling league, he does not drink wine or coffee, strongly disapproves of smoking and at first only eats the simplest food due to poor digestion (but later enjoys a healthy appetite). He dislikes sleeping on upper floors due to nervousness about fire.

He was at school with Lord Emsworth but in a junior year. The young Roderick was called 'Pimples'. He has a pleasant baritone voice and used to sing at medical school concerts. A member of the Demosthenes Club, he has a reputation as a bore.

History

Thanks to Jeeves, he is convinced that Bertie Wooster is a loony and not suitable to marry Honoria (The Inimitable Jeeves), a view confirmed in later encounters.

He formed a similar opinion of 'Biffy' Biffen shortly after he became engaged to Honoria in The Rummy Affair of Old Biffy.

While in New York he somehow broke up the engagement between Bertie Wooster and Pauline Stocker. Back in England, he hoped to marry Myrtle, Lady Chuffnell, even blacking-up to entertain her son, but that went wrong leaving him out in the cold with no way of removing the boot polish. Finding Wooster in a similar position, he realised that Bertie is not barmy, so forming the foundation for later friendship. (Thank You, Jeeves)

Lord Emsworth tried to hire him to examine the Duke of Dunstable, but he declined after Lord E. called him by his old school nickname. He relented but was headed off before getting to Blandings. (Uncle Fred in the Springtime)

Later, he posed as a butler, under the name 'Swordfish', to observe the behaviour of Willie Cream on behalf of Dahlia Travers. While at Brinkley Court, he and Bertie got to first name terms. (Jeeves in the Offing)

He did get engaged to Myrtle but she refused to wed while his daughter was single; she would not share a house with Honoria. (Jeeves and the Greasy Bird)
