He is also known as J. Sheringham Adair, of the Tilbury Detective Agency Ltd. He was once the friend of bank robber Edward Finglass who sent him half of the information needed to find the loot from his last robbery. The other half went to Chimp's rival, Soapy Molloy. Chimp conned Soapy out of his half of the information but failed to capitalize, despite his great fortune in being employed by Lord Tilbury in a capacity which got him where he needed to be; a suburban house in Valley Fields. (Sam the Sudden)
Later, he ran the health farm known as Healthward Ho under the title Doctor Twist. This was an honest if expensive establishment dedicated to making fat men thinner and fitter. He was brought in by the Molloys to assist with a fake burglary at Rudge Hall. (Money for Nothing)
Again using his persona of Adair, but now based in Mayfair, he overheard Lord Uffenham and his niece discuss the 'mislaying' of their diamonds and their search for them. He communicated this to the Molloys who were staying at Lord U's place and they entered into a partnership. He joined them at Shipley Hall and talked his way out of a trap set by Dolly Molloy. But he still didn't get the diamonds. (Money in the Bank)
As Adair, he was employed by Leila Yorke to find her husband. Told about some hidden jewellery by Soapy, he planned to get it for himself. (Ice in the Bedroom)
As Adair, he was hired by Grayce Llewellyn to guard her pearl necklace (worth $50,000) and to keep an eye on her husband to see that he stuck to his diet. Seeing the Molloys were also on the premises, he offered them a deal but they didn't like the split (70/30 to Chimp) and declined. He foiled Dolly Molloy's first attempt at the necklace, by good fortune, then she stopped his attempt. But he didn't give up ... (Pearls, Girls and Monty Bodkin)
